Northshore Technical Community College (NTCC) GPA Calculator

Beyond the standard letter grades, NTCC uses several notations that carry no grade points and are not calculated into a student's cumulative GPA:

• W — official withdrawal from a course, assigned after the 14th day of class and before the drop deadline on the Academic Calendar.
• P — credit awarded through the Credit for Prior Learning policy.
• S — satisfactory grade.
• U — unsatisfactory grade.
• I — incomplete, assigned only for unavoidable or extenuating circumstances; counted in hours attempted but not in GPA. If not resolved by the deadline in the academic calendar, it converts automatically to a permanent F.
• AU — course audited, not taken for credit.
• R — assigned alongside a grade for a repeated course.
• T — assigned alongside a grade for a transferred course.

A student's GPA is computed by adding the total quality points earned for all courses with a computable quality-point value, then dividing by the number of credit hours attempted during the same period. Quality points for a course equal its grade points multiplied by its credit hours.

If a course is repeated, the higher of the two grades replaces the previous grade in the GPA calculation — including an F that is later improved by a repeat.

Once a student has attempted 15 credit hours (including hours attempted at other institutions), academic performance is evaluated at the end of each semester. A student who does not maintain at least a 2.0 GPA for that semester is placed in "not in good standing" (probation) status, though still permitted to register for the next semester. A student remains "not in good standing" until the required semester or cumulative GPA reaches 2.0 or higher.

Graduation requires a quality-point-to-semester-hour ratio of 2.0 (a "C" average) in the courses of the degree program pursued. A grade of C or higher is required for a course to count toward an associate degree, technical diploma, or certificate; a D is applicable only in a General Education course counted toward the General Education core of an associate degree.

At the end of each fall and spring semester, NTCC produces a Dean's List naming students who earned a 3.00 GPA or higher for a load of at least 12 credit hours that semester, and a Chancellor's List for students achieving a 4.00 GPA or higher for at least 12 credit hours that semester. Both lists are communicated electronically to recipient students.

A "T" notation is assigned in addition to a grade for a course that is transferred from another institution.
