Long Island University (LIU) GPA Calculator

LIU also uses several symbols outside the A–F quality-point scale, none of which is computed into the GPA:

• P (Pass) — credits are earned, but the grade is not calculated into the GPA.
• INC (Incomplete) — assigned when required coursework is unfinished; the change of grade is due within 2 semesters or the INC remains permanently on the record.
• W (Withdrawal) — automatically assigned when a student officially withdraws by the published deadline.
• NC (No Credit) — assigned to students who never attended, or stopped attending before the withdrawal deadline without properly withdrawing.
• U — assigned in certain proficiency courses when required work is completed in a fashion unacceptable to warrant a passing grade; the course must be repeated the following semester.

Quality points for a course are the grade's quality-point value multiplied by the course's credits; the GPA is total quality points divided by total credits attempted, including failed courses. Grades of W, NC, and P are not counted in the GPA, nor are grades from courses taken at another college or university. GPA is carried to three decimal places, then rounded to two.

Students may repeat a course; credit is earned only once, and the second grade (higher or lower) replaces the first in the GPA. If a course is taken more than twice, all grades after the first count toward the GPA. Required courses failed with an F should be repeated within one year.

Undergraduates may opt for a pass/fail grade in at most one course per semester, for up to eight semesters total; the option excludes major, prerequisite, and core-requirement courses and must be elected by the 10th week of the semester. A resulting P does not count toward the GPA; a resulting F does.

Undergraduate students must maintain the following minimum grade point average to remain in good academic standing:

• 1.8, up to 29 accumulated credits
• 1.9, for 30–59 accumulated credits
• 2.0, for 60 or more accumulated credits

Students who receive a grade of W, NC, or INC, or who opt for pass/fail, in the fall or spring semester are ineligible for the Dean's List that semester.

Undergraduate students must achieve an overall GPA of 2.00 to graduate; graduate students must achieve an overall GPA of 3.00. Some departments require higher overall averages. In the major area, students must achieve an average of at least 2.00, though certain programs set a higher minimum major average.

For consideration for graduation with honors, a student's average includes only the grade received the first time a specific course was taken — later attempts at a repeated course, even if used in the general cumulative GPA, are excluded from the honors calculation.

Grades earned in courses taken at another college or university are not counted in the LIU GPA computation.
