How grades are determined

Each theory course is assessed through class attendance (10%), class tests and quizzes (15%), a mid-semester examination (25%), and the semester-final examination (50%). Students must maintain at least 85% attendance in each course to sit the semester-final examination; the Vice-Chancellor may condone up to 10% of the requirement on the Head of Department's recommendation.

GPA and CGPA calculation

Grade Point Average (GPA) is the credit-weighted average of the grade points earned in a semester: total grade points secured divided by total credit hours taken. A student passes a semester only after passing every course in it, with a minimum semester GPA of 2.00 for undergraduate programmes. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the same calculation carried across all completed semesters.

Referred examinations and repeated semesters

A student failing no more than two theoretical courses may sit a Referred Examination covering the full syllabus, with the resulting grade capped at a maximum of B regardless of the mark achieved. A student failing three or more theoretical subjects (or referred subjects) may be provisionally promoted to the next semester with a reduced course load, as decided by the Head of Department. Admission is cancelled after two consecutive semester failures.

Degree award requirements

A Certificate, Diploma, Higher Diploma, Bachelor, or Master degree is awarded once a student passes the prescribed subjects of all semesters and completes any required industrial attachment, special assignments, practical training, and remedial courses, subject to approval by the Academic Council.

Class of degree and gold medals

Graduates with a Cumulative GPA of 3.75 or above are placed in the First Class with Honours; 3.00 or above in the First Class; other successful candidates are placed in the Second Class (classes are not awarded for the Master of Technical Education). The department-wise IUT Gold Medal requires a CGPA of at least 3.80 out of 4.00; the university-wide OIC Gold Medal requires at least 3.90 out of 4.00 and the top rank among all successful students of every department.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at IUT?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at IUT?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Islamic University of Technology (IUT) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does this scale apply to IUT's postgraduate programmes?

No. IUT's postgraduate (M.Sc./M.Engg.) programmes use a separate, university-approved grading scale that differs from the undergraduate table used here: postgraduate grading has no D grade, C equals 2.00 grade points instead of 2.25, and F applies below 45% instead of below 40%. This calculator uses the undergraduate scale, which governs all undergraduate Engineering and Technical Education programmes.
