Academic Renewal

Academic renewal lets substandard D or F grades be alleviated and excluded from the cumulative GPA calculation. Up to 12 semester units of substandard coursework, district-wide, may be eliminated this way; courses already used toward a degree or certificate may not be alleviated.

To petition for academic renewal, a student must have subsequently achieved a GPA of 2.00 over 24 semester units, 2.50 over 18 semester units, or 3.00 over 12 semester units.

Good Standing, Probation, and Dismissal

A student is in good standing while maintaining a minimum 2.0 GPA, with fewer than one-third of enrolled units graded W, I, or NP.

A student is placed on academic probation when their grade point average in all units attempted falls below 2.0, and on progress probation when W, I, NC, EW, and NP entries reach or exceed one-third (33%) of enrolled units. A student on probation who earns a semester GPA of 1.75 or better is not dismissed as long as that minimum is maintained.

A student on academic probation is subject to dismissal after earning a cumulative GPA below 1.75 in each of three consecutive semesters, or after W/I/NC/NP entries reach or exceed 33% of enrolled units in each of three consecutive semesters.

Dean's List and President's Citation

Two honors recognitions are based on GPA: the President's Citation, awarded when a student completes twelve or more units with a 4.0 GPA in one semester, and the Dean's List, for students who complete twelve or more units, achieve a GPA of 3.0 or above, and receive no grade below C.

PE activity classes and Pass/No Pass classes are not counted toward GPA eligibility for the Dean's List or President's Citation; incomplete grades and credit-by-examination classes are also excluded.
