Plus/Minus Grading System

Towson University uses the Plus/Minus Grading System (4.00 scale, term system), implemented in fall 1998. It applies to all undergraduate students and cannot be applied retroactively to grades earned or recorded, including incomplete (I) grades or contested grades, before fall 1998.

Effective Minimester 2006, Towson University suspended use of the C- grade.

How the GPA Is Calculated

The Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed by multiplying the units for each course by the grade points assigned to the grade earned, totaling the units and grade points for the term, then dividing the total grade points by the total units.

Grades of S, U, W, PE, and I are not calculated in a student's GPA. The grade of PS (Pass) carries no GPA value when earned at C or higher; if a student under the Pass option earns D+ or below, that letter grade is recorded and used in the GPA calculation instead. The grade of FX is calculated in a student's GPA (value 0.00) and is given to students who stop attending without officially withdrawing. An Incomplete (I) automatically lapses to F 120 days after the end of the term unless changed to another grade.

Unsuccessful Term / Academic Clemency

Students may request an Unsuccessful Term (academic clemency) if: three years have elapsed since the term in question and graduation has not occurred; the student has completed at least 24 units of 2.00-level work at TU since that term; and only one Unsuccessful Term has been granted in the student's academic career. Grades tied to an academic integrity violation are not adjusted. A resulting Below Good Standing notation may be removed from the record, though other academic standing notations remain. Requests are submitted to the Academic Standards Committee, up until the end of the term following graduation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at TU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at TU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Towson University (TU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
