Numeric grades, rounding and passing

At Sheridan, a summative evaluation receives a numeric grade between 0 and 100. Final grades are entered in the Student Information System as whole numbers: .5 and greater rounds up, and less than .5 rounds down.

  • Unless a course outline or program literature states otherwise, the pass for a course is 50%.
  • Select programs require a minimum of 60% or greater in specific courses. A lower grade still appears on the transcript with its credits, but it does not satisfy the program requirement.
  • Apprenticeship programs are graded according to the system established by the Apprenticeship Board, not Sheridan's grading scale.

How Sheridan calculates your GPA

Sheridan GPAs are weighted by credit value: each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit value, and GPA = Total Weighted Credit Value ÷ Total Credit Value.

  • Cumulative GPA is calculated per term and over your entire academic history with Sheridan.
  • Program GPAs are calculated per term and for the specific program, using only the courses that make up your program of study.
  • Repeated courses: grades from all attempts appear on your transcript, but only the highest grade is used in GPA calculations.
  • Zero-point designations: FNE (registered but submitted no work and did not officially withdraw) and TM (enrolment terminated for a breach of academic integrity) each carry 0.0 grade points.

Sheridan uses seven GPA types. Program Term GPA and Program Cumulative GPA apply to certificate, diploma and degree programs. The core, non-core/breadth and overall cumulative GPAs apply to degree programs only.

Transfer credit and your GPA

Credit from comparable courses at another institution is recorded as AS (Advanced Standing). A series of courses used to satisfy a transfer agreement is recorded as BT (Block Transfer). Both designations are excluded from the calculation of your Sheridan GPA.
