How grading works at Hope College

Hope College grades on a 4.0 quality-point scale with no percentage bands attached: A (4.0), A- (3.7), B+ (3.3), B (3.0), B- (2.7), C+ (2.3), C (2.0), C- (1.7), D+ (1.3), D (1.0), D- (0.7), and F (0.0).

There is no A+ — A is the top of the scale. Both D+ and D- exist, unlike some other private colleges that omit the D modifiers.

How your GPA is calculated at Hope College

Your GPA is the number of earned quality points divided by the number of semester credits attempted, excluding Pass and Withdrawal credits. For example, an A, B, C, D, or F in a 3-credit course earns 12, 9, 6, 3, or 0 quality points respectively.

A grade earned through the Pass/Fail option is recorded differently depending on the outcome: a Pass (P) does not get computed into your cumulative GPA at all, though you still earn credit; a Failure (F) is computed into your GPA as zero quality points, the same as a standard F.

Dean's List at Hope College

The Dean's List is awarded each semester to full-time, degree-seeking students with a semester GPA of 3.5 or above. Every course must be graded — a student with any Incomplete (I) or No Report (NR) grade at compile time is not included, even if the grade is later resolved to a qualifying level.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at Hope College?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at Hope College?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Hope College GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does Hope College award an A+?

No. Hope's official grading table runs from A (4.0) down to F (0.0) with no A+ listed — A is the highest grade and quality-point value awarded.

Does a Pass (P) grade affect my GPA at Hope College?

No. Under Hope's Pass/Fail option, a Pass (P) earns course credit but is explicitly excluded from your cumulative GPA calculation. If the course results in a Failure (F) instead, it is computed into your GPA as zero quality points.

What happens to an Incomplete (I) or No Report (NR) grade at Hope College?

Both carry no quality-point value while outstanding. An Incomplete (I) is given only for circumstances beyond a student's control and must be resolved within six weeks of the session's close; a No Report (NR) means the instructor has not yet submitted a grade. Either one becomes an F if unresolved after six weeks, and both block degree conferral and Dean's List inclusion until resolved.

Does a Withdrawal (W) affect my GPA at Hope College?

No. A Withdrawal (W) grade carries no quality-point value and is explicitly excluded from the credits-attempted figure used to calculate your GPA.
