Colgate reports final grades on a 13-step letter scale: A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, and F. Each is assigned quality points on a 4.00-point scale: A+ and A both carry 4.00, down through D- at 0.67 and F at 0.00 -- Colgate's own catalog states grades "range from a high of A+ (4.00) to F (0.00)."

A number of other codes appear on a Colgate transcript but carry no quality points and are never averaged into the GPA: EX (AP/IB/international exam credit), TR (transfer credit), S/U (the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading option), O/N (Physical Education), T (an in-progress two-term course), H (January-term-project honors), P/X (the Pass/Fail option), and the administrative notations W (withdrawal), I (incomplete), and NG (no grade submitted).

Colgate's Grade Point Average is obtained by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the number of course credits attempted for grades. Quality points are assigned to full (1.00) credit courses as A+ 4.00, A 4.00, A- 3.67, B+ 3.33, B 3.00, B- 2.67, C+ 2.33, C 2.00, C- 1.67, D+ 1.33, D 1.00, D- 0.67, F 0.00; fractional-credit courses scale proportionally.

If a course is repeated, only the highest grade counts toward the term and cumulative GPA (or, if the same grade is earned twice, only the first attempt counts). W, I, and NG entries are administrative notations, not grades, and are excluded from the GPA entirely.

Students must earn a minimum GPA of 2.00 each term, as well as cumulatively, to remain in good academic standing. A student who falls short of this in a term (or cumulatively) is placed on academic warning; a student already on warning who fails to earn at least a 2.00 term GPA is subject to academic suspension. A student who fails three or more courses in a term, or whose GPA (term or cumulative) drops below 1.33, is subject to suspension even without a prior warning.

Colgate confers one undergraduate degree, the Bachelor of Arts (AB). Graduation requires a minimum of 32 academic course credits and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 across all Colgate courses, plus a GPA of 2.00 within the declared major. A minimum grade of C- in introductory coursework is normally required for admission to a major.

University honors, based on all courses attempted at Colgate, are summa cum laude (3.80), magna cum laude (3.50), and cum laude (3.30). Beginning with the Class of 2028, these are additionally calibrated by class rank (roughly the top 5%, next 10%, and next 15% of the graduating class).

Each term, students who complete at least 3 letter-graded course credits (and a minimum of 3.75 total credits) can earn the Dean's Award with a term GPA of 3.7 or higher, or (for students entering Fall 2025 or later) Dean's Award with Distinction at 3.6+ and Dean's Award at 3.3+.

To be eligible for transfer credit at Colgate, a course generally requires a grade of C or better; courses taken pass/fail, satisfactory/unsatisfactory, or otherwise ungraded are not eligible. Matriculated students may receive transfer credit for a maximum of six Colgate course credits (incoming transfer students are subject to a separate, higher limit). Transfer, Advanced Placement, and approved off-campus program grades and credit appear on the transcript but are not counted toward the Colgate GPA.
