How Your GPA Is Calculated at Cerro Coso

GPA is total grade points earned divided by total semester units attempted; grade points earned for a course are the grade's point value multiplied by the course's unit value.

  • EW, I, IP, MW, NP, P, SP, and W carry no grade-point value and are not computed in the GPA.
  • Units earned on a Pass/No Pass basis are not used to calculate GPA, though an "NP" is still counted in probation and dismissal calculations.

Academic Renewal (grade forgiveness): up to 20 units of substandard "D" and "F" grades may be disregarded from the GPA if at least two years have elapsed since the coursework, the student has since completed a minimum of 18 units at a 2.5 GPA or better elsewhere, and a petition is approved by the Academic Petitions Committee. The disregarded coursework stays on the permanent record and cannot be used to qualify for graduation with honors.

Academic and Progress Probation

A student who has attempted at least 12 cumulative semester units is placed on Academic Probation if their cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, or on Progress Probation if the percentage of units graded "W", "I", "NC", or "NP" reaches 50% or more.

  • Removal from probation requires a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher (academic probation) or the W/I/NC/NP share falling back below 50% (progress probation).
  • A student on either type of probation for three semesters of enrollment is disqualified from admission to courses the following semester, unless the last semester's results already met the recovery threshold, in which case the student is placed on continued probation instead.
  • A disqualified student may petition for readmission with a student education plan and success contract, subject to approval by the Vice President of Student Services or designee.

GPA and Residency Requirements for a Degree

An associate degree requires satisfactory completion of at least 60 semester units with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 ("C" average) in all courses required for the degree. All major courses must be completed with a "C" grade or better, and at least 12 of the 60 required units must be completed at Cerro Coso Community College.

GPA Requirements to Transfer to UC/CSU

Transfer students may be admitted to the University of California with a grade point average of 2.40 in a minimum of 60 units of UC-transferable community college coursework, or to the California State University with a GPA of 2.0 in a minimum of 60 units of baccalaureate-level coursework.

A maximum of 70 community college units may be transferred to a CSU campus; no further unit credit is granted beyond that, though additional coursework may still satisfy subject-matter requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at Cerro Coso College?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at Cerro Coso College?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Cerro Coso College GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
