How Your GPA Is Calculated

Your grade point average (GPA) is determined by multiplying each grade's numerical weight by the number of credits (semester hours) for that course, then dividing the total quality points by the number of credits attempted.

  • Grades of INC, P, W, AUD, RP and RM carry no quality points, and those credits are not counted in credits attempted — they have no effect on your GPA.
  • Courses transferred to Western from another institution are not included in your GPA.
  • Credits taken on a pass/fail basis do not generate quality points and are excluded from the academic average.

Repeat policy: you may repeat most courses, but credit counts only once toward graduation. For a repeated course, the highest grade earned replaces the lower grade in your GPA calculation — the lower grade stays visible on your transcript but is not counted. Courses designated X98/X99 and Special Topics courses are excluded from this policy, and transferred courses are not eligible for it.

Academic Standing

Students are placed on Academic Warning the first fall or spring semester their cumulative GPA falls below 2.0. If the cumulative GPA is not raised to 2.0 the following fall or spring semester, the student moves to Academic Probation, and may continue provided their semester GPA is at least 2.3; probation ends once the cumulative GPA reaches 2.0. Students have three semesters on probation to reach a 2.0 cumulative GPA. A student whose semester GPA falls below 2.3 while on probation (with cumulative GPA still below 2.0), or whose cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 after the third probationary semester, is Academically Suspended.

Graduation GPA Requirement

To remain in good academic standing and be granted a diploma, students must maintain a cumulative average of at least 2.0 ("C"). Professional curricula and some major programs set additional or higher GPA standards that must be met at specific intervals.

Dean's List and Graduation Honors

Dean's List: full-time matriculated students need a minimum 3.5 semester average on at least 12 graded semester hours, awarded each fall and spring semester. Part-time matriculated students need a 3.5 average across a minimum 12 graded semester hours completed over the full academic year, awarded at the end of spring. Students with an incomplete grade, or whose gradable course load drops below 12 credits due to pass/fail enrollment, are ineligible.

Graduation Honors require a minimum 30 semester hours of quality-point-bearing credit in residence at Western (no pass/fail or transfer credit counted) and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5: Summa Cum Laude 3.9–4.0, Magna Cum Laude 3.7–3.89, Cum Laude 3.5–3.69.

Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester GPAs across every semester: (semester GPA₁ × credits₁ + … + semester GPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + … + creditsₙ). Is this WCSU GPA calculator free, and is my data private?
Yes. GPAWise is free, with no signup, and your courses and saved semesters stay in your browser: nothing is sent to our servers. "Clear all tracker data" on the tracker wipes them at any time.
