Compton College GPA Calculator

Compton College uses evaluative letter grades of A, B, C, D, and F, each carrying a fixed grade-point value per unit (A is the highest, F the lowest); the college does not award plus or minus variants of these letters.

Pass (P), No Pass (NP), and Satisfactory Progress (SP) grades are not calculated into the grade-point average. Several other transcript symbols — Incomplete (I), In Progress (IP), Withdrawal (W), Military Withdrawal (MW), Excused Withdrawal (EW), and Report Delayed (RD) — are also excluded from the GPA calculation; an Incomplete converts to a default letter grade if not resolved by the end of the following regular semester.

The grade-point average equals total grade points divided by total units attempted in credit courses for which a letter grade was assigned; courses graded Pass/No Pass or ending in a Withdrawal are not part of this calculation.

Students may petition for Academic Renewal to disregard up to 30 semester units of substandard (D or F) coursework from their GPA, provided at least a year has passed since the grade was awarded and the student has since earned a 2.0 GPA or higher over the next 24 graded units. Academic Renewal may be granted only once, and disregarded coursework cannot be used to meet degree or certificate requirements; the original grades remain visible on the transcript.

A student whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 is placed on Academic Warning after one semester and Academic Hold after two consecutive semesters; standing returns to good standing once the cumulative GPA reaches 2.0 or higher again. A parallel track — Progress Warning and Progress Hold — applies when a high share of attempted units end in Withdrawal, Incomplete, or No Pass.

A student on Academic Hold is subject to dismissal after a cumulative GPA below 2.0 persists for three consecutive semesters; dismissed students may petition for readmission.

An Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree requires at least 60 degree-applicable units, including general education and major coursework, completed with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher — counting both coursework taken at Compton College and, for the residency-adjusted total, coursework completed at all colleges. At least 12 semester units must be completed in residence at Compton College.

A student who completes 12 or more units in a single semester with a GPA of 3.0 or higher earns a Dean's List notation on that semester's transcript.

An Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree is awarded "with Honors" when the student's cumulative GPA is 3.5 or higher.

Students pursuing an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) to the CSU system need at least a 2.0 GPA across all CSU-transferable coursework, with major-required courses completed at a grade of C or better (or Pass, if taken Pass/No Pass); some majors set a higher minimum. Upper-division CSU transfer separately requires the four "Golden Four" general-education courses (English Composition, Oral Communication and Critical Thinking, and Mathematical Concepts/Quantitative Reasoning) to each be completed with a grade of C- or better — a CSU admission standard, not a Compton College evaluative symbol.
