Grading Policy

Every instructor must provide a course syllabus to students at the start of each academic term. This syllabus must include the course evaluation methods and the grading scale used in that course.

How the GPA Is Calculated

The academic average (grade point average) is computed from the numerical value assigned to each earned letter grade and the number of credits per course: numerical quality points equal the grade's value multiplied by the course's credit hours, and the academic average is the total quality points earned divided by the total credits taken, whether passed or failed.

Grades received in ESL or developmental courses are not included in the computation of the grade point average.

When a student repeats a course, only the higher grade is averaged into the cumulative average, and both attempts remain on the transcript. A course may not be repeated more than once, including a "W" grade, without written approval from the Division Dean; repeating a course in which a "D" or better was previously earned does not earn additional credits toward the degree, only an improved grade-point average.

Academic Probation, Dismissal, and Forgiveness

A student maintaining less than a 2.0 cumulative GPA is not in good academic standing and may be assessed for probation or dismissal. A student who falls below a 2.0 cumulative GPA is placed on probation for one semester and is expected to bring the cumulative GPA back to 2.0 or better by the following semester.

A student who remains on probation after that period may be assessed for dismissal from the College. A dismissed student must wait at least one full semester (excluding Summer Sessions) before seeking readmission, and may be readmitted only twice after a dismissal action. Dismissed students may appeal for a waiver to the Special Appeals Committee; the Vice President for Academic Affairs makes the final decision.

While on probation, a student may not carry more than 13 credits in a semester without approval, and may not hold office in any organization or participate in any extracurricular activity.

A student who has been absent from the College for two full years, has been readmitted, and has earned at least 12 credit hours with a 2.0 average or higher since readmission may apply once for academic forgiveness, which omits former grades and credits from the grade point average calculation. Forgiveness is granted at the College's discretion on individual merit, only once, and is irrevocable.

Transfer Credit Policy

Courses transferred must be from accredited colleges or universities. A student transferring to UCNJ must complete a minimum of 24 credits of their degree program at UCNJ; non-remedial transferred courses must carry a grade of "C" or better. Transfer credit is awarded based on program requirements, transfer regulations, and the New Jersey State Transfer guidelines; grades from other institutions are not transferred onto the UCNJ transcript.

UCNJ also awards transfer credit for Advanced Placement scores of 4 or higher, International Baccalaureate scores of 4 or higher on standard- or higher-level exams, and CLEP exams (up to 12 credits for the Language CLEP exam, up to 9 credits in other subject areas) — all counting toward the maximum transfer credits allowed for a certificate or degree program.
