How the GPA Is Calculated

Stevens uses a Quality Points System: an course's grade value is multiplied by its semester hours to produce quality points, and the GPA is the sum of quality points divided by the sum of quality hours attempted — so a grade in a three-credit course carries three times the weight of the same grade in a one-credit course. The lowest passing grade for undergraduate courses is D; grades from courses taken at another institution are never recorded or used in computing a Stevens GPA, even when transfer credit is granted.

Each course required for a bachelor's degree must be passed within three attempts (a W or F counts as not passing); a student who cannot meet this in a required course must either choose a program that doesn't require it or withdraw from Stevens. If a previously passed course is retaken and the retake results in an F or W, the course is still counted as passed using the original grade for the graduating GPA.

Academic Standing

To maintain good academic standing each semester, undergraduate students must earn at least 12 credits and a 2.000 or higher semester GPA, with no more than two withdrawals or failures, and must have a cumulative GPA of 2.000 or higher.

A student whose performance falls short is placed on Academic Notice; the Office of Undergraduate Academics and the student's advisor help identify the difficulty and a plan to address it. A student on Academic Notice who does not meet the good-standing criteria the following semester is placed on Academic Warning. A student can only be on Academic Notice once — a student previously on Academic Notice or Academic Warning who returns to good standing and later falls short again goes directly to Academic Warning.

Graduation Requirements

To be eligible for graduation, a student must have a "C" average (2.00 cumulative GPA) and pass all required courses for their major curriculum. A GPA of at least 1.75 is also required for all courses taken during the senior year. At least 50% of the credits required for a Stevens degree must be taken at Stevens.

Dean's List and Graduation Honors

For students entering Stevens fall 2016 or later, the Dean's List is prepared each term by the Registrar's Office; eligibility requires good standing, at least 12 credits, a 3.5 term GPA, no failures, and no more than one course withdrawal. (Students who entered prior to fall 2016 remain on a legacy 3.0 term GPA threshold under the same other conditions.) A finding of responsibility for an Honor System violation can make a student ineligible for that academic year's Dean's List.

An undergraduate Degree with Honor is conferred at a 3.4 cumulative GPA in courses required for the degree; Degree with High Honor at 3.6; and Degree with Highest Honor at 3.85 or higher.

Transfer Credit

A grade of C or better is required for a course taken at another school to be accepted for transfer credit toward an undergraduate degree at Stevens; an official transcript must be sent to the Registrar's Office. No more than two humanities courses may be transferred in from U.S. colleges, and upper-level humanities credit can only be transferred from four-year colleges. Transfer grades are never recorded or used in computing a student's Stevens GPA, even when transfer credit is granted for a course previously attempted at Stevens. Students enrolled full-time (12-18 credits) may not simultaneously take courses at another institution for transfer credit.
