Camosun College GPA Calculator

Camosun College uses a standard grading system for most academic, technical, and career-based programming: a percentage mark maps to a letter grade and a grade point on a 0–9 scale (not the more common 4.0/4.33/4.5 GPA scale). The scale runs from A+ (90–100%, 9 points) down to F (0–49%, 0 points). A grade of D (50–59%, 1 point) is the minimum level of achievement for which credit is granted, but a course graded D cannot be used to satisfy a prerequisite/requisite requirement elsewhere.

This nine-point system was first implemented in September 1990; grades earned before September 1, 1990 are recalculated onto the same nine-point system whenever a transcript is processed.

Camosun's separate competency-based grading system

Alongside the standard percentage/grade-point scale, Camosun recognizes a second, competency-based grading system for courses where satisfactory acquisition of defined skills or successful completion of course learning outcomes is the basis of evaluation, rather than a numeric mark. It uses three outcomes instead of a percentage or grade point:

• COM (Complete) — met the goals, criteria, or competencies established for the course, practicum, or field placement.
• DST (Distinction) — met and exceeded those goals, criteria, or competencies.
• NC (Not Complete) — did not meet them.

This system applies only to designated skills-based courses/programs and does not carry a percentage band or a 0–9 grade-point value — it runs in parallel to, not as part of, the standard scale above.

Camosun's grade point average is a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points (0–9) by its credit value, sum those products across courses, and divide by the total credits. The policy's own worked example: five 3.0-credit courses graded A- (7), B+ (6), C+ (3), A (8), and C (2) give (7+6+3+8+2)×3 = 78 grade points across 15 credits, for a GPA of 78 ÷ 15 = 5.2.

Courses that have not been assigned a credit value are excluded from GPA calculations. A student's transcript shows two such averages: a Term GPA (courses in a single semester) and a Cumulative GPA (all academic courses taken at Camosun).

No formula is published for converting an aggregate GPA back into a percentage — the percentage itself is the primary recorded grade in Camosun's standard system, with the letter grade and grade point both derived from it.

Temporary grades and transcript notations

Two temporary grades appear before a final grade is assigned: I (Incomplete — students have six weeks to complete outstanding requirements, after which the grade converts to a final F or NC) and IP (In Progress — used where further enrollment in the same course is required; converts to a final NC or F if unresolved by the third consecutive term).

Two further transcript notations appear on a student's record: AUD (Audit — no grade assigned, doesn't count toward program completion, admission requirements, or prerequisites) and W (Withdrawal — official withdrawal before the deadline). The policy states explicitly that these notations do not affect a student's GPA.
