How grading works at the University of Western Australia (UWA)
UWA grades units on a percentage mark converted to a letter grade, each carrying a fixed GPA point value: HD (High Distinction, 80–100%, value 7), D (Distinction, 70–79%, value 6), CR (Credit Pass, 60–69%, value 5), P (Pass, 50–59%, value 4), N+ (Fail, 45–49%, value 0) and N (Fail, 0–44%, value 0).
A number of administrative codes also carry a GPA value but no percentage band of their own — for example PS (Passed Supplementary Exam, value 4, the same as a Pass) and FN/FC/FS/UF/WE (fail-type codes, all value 0). Points for units have been published only from 2005 onwards.

How UWA calculates your GPA
Your GPA is the sum of each unit's credit points × GPA grade value, divided by your total credit points. The calculation includes all unit attempts awarded a numeric grade; unfinalised results are not included.
Withdrawing from a unit: if you withdraw before the academic penalty date, the unit does not count towards your GPA at all. Withdrawing after the academic penalty date counts towards your GPA as a fail grade.
A separate, different GPA calculation applies for admission or progression to the Juris Doctor, Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dental Medicine, Master of Pharmacy or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine — the admission GPA differs from the one recorded on your transcript.

Honours classifications at UWA
UWA's Honours results are separate award classifications, not per-unit course grades: H1 (First Class Honours), H2 (Second Class Honours, with divisions 2A and 2B), and H3 (Third Class Honours), alongside DI (Distinction) and DX (Higher Distinction) used in some professional-degree contexts.

How credit transfer and advanced standing affect your UWA GPA
If you transfer between UWA courses, your advanced standing is awarded as 'duplicate credit', and the mark(s) are counted towards your GPA.
If you transfer credit from an old course, or receive advanced standing from previous studies at another institution (or are in a postgraduate course), you'll see the credit points reflected on your record — but the marks are not carried over and are not used to calculate your GPA.

What's the difference between WAM and GPA at UWA?
Both are officially recorded on your Statement of Academic Record from 2005 onwards, but they're computed independently: WAM (Weighted Average Mark) is a weighted average of your raw unit marks (0–100), while GPA is a weighted average of the fixed point value UWA assigns to your grade (HD=7 down to 0 for any fail). They can genuinely differ — a Failed Component (FC), for example, contributes an invisible mark of 48 to your WAM but a GPA value of 0.

What is UWA's lowest passing grade?
P (Pass), 50–59%, GPA value 4, is UWA's lowest passing grade. N+ (45–49%) and N (0–44%) are both fail grades, each valued at 0 in your GPA.
