Louisiana State University (LSU) GPA Calculator

Faculty members evaluate each student’s work individually and must state the relative weight of graded components in the course syllabus. The letter grades carry the following meanings for undergraduate courses:

• A, including A+ and A-, denotes distinguished mastery of the course material.
• B, including B+ and B-, denotes good mastery of the course material.
• C, including C+ and C-, denotes acceptable mastery of the course material.
• D, including D+ and D-, denotes minimally acceptable achievement.
• F denotes failure.

References to a specific letter grade in university regulations mean the full letter-grade range (for example, a required “C” means C+, C, or C- or better). A grade of P (pass) denotes satisfactory completion — C or better — of advanced-standing/proficiency examinations, pass-fail option courses, and certain other courses; NC (no credit) indicates no credit is earned. Grades of P, W, I, and NC are not used in computing the official GPA and do not carry quality points.

GPA is calculated by dividing total quality points earned by total semester hours attempted. LSU distinguishes three GPA figures: overall GPA (all attempted work), Cumulative GPA (all work attempted at every college/university attended), and LSU GPA (work attempted at LSU only). GPAs are reported to three decimal places, rounded from a five-significant-figure average (0.5 rounds up, below 0.5 is dropped).

All courses for which a graded letter is assigned — including repeated courses — count toward the GPA, except grades of P, W, I, and NC, which carry no quality points. When a course is repeated, only the most recent grade is used in GPA calculations. Credit earned through proficiency examinations or Prior Learning Assessment is not used in computing GPA.

Academic standing is assessed at the end of each fall and spring term. A student is placed on University Scholastic Warning if their LSU or overall GPA falls below 2.00. A student already on Warning moves to University Scholastic Probation if their semester (or paired-term) GPA is also below 2.00. A student on Probation is placed on University Scholastic Drop — dismissed from the university — if their academic-period GPA remains below 2.00. Bringing LSU and overall GPA back up to at least 2.00 returns a student to good standing at any stage. Warning, Probation, and Drop notations are recorded on the official LSU transcript. Students dropped for academic reasons may seek readmission after being out of the institution for one regular semester (two consecutive modules/sessions for LSU Online).

How much credit from another college or university counts toward an LSU degree is decided by the dean of the college awarding the degree; only credit acceptable as baccalaureate-degree credit at the sending institution is recognized, and students may not take courses concurrently at another institution without their dean’s prior written approval. The Louisiana Board of Regents’ Statewide Student Transfer Guide and Course Articulation Matrix governs transfer equivalencies among the state’s public colleges and universities, and is applied automatically going forward for general-education courses from the 2023-24 academic year on, as components of LSU’s Integrative Learning Core. All transfer courses accepted by the university appear on the LSU transcript regardless of whether they satisfy degree requirements. Up to one-fourth of the credit required for a degree may be earned through regionally accredited university correspondence study.
