The instructor of record for each course determines the grade awarded, and that determination is final unless there is evidence of mistake, fraud, bad faith, or incompetence (LACCD Administrative Procedure 4231). Only the evaluative and non-evaluative symbols defined in the college's grading scale may be used to grade coursework (LACCD Administrative Procedure 4230). A student may not challenge a grade more than one year after the end of the term in which the course was taken, absent extenuating circumstances.

Grades of P (Pass) and NP (No Pass), and the noncredit-only SP (Satisfactory Progress) symbol, carry no grade-point value and are not counted in the GPA. The I (Incomplete), IP (In Progress), RD (Report Delayed), W (Withdrawal), MW (Military Withdrawal) and EW (Excused Withdrawal) symbols are likewise excluded from the GPA, though W counts toward progress-probation thresholds.

When a course is repeated after a substandard grade ("D", "F", "NC" or "NP"), the highest grade earned in the first and second repetition is used in the cumulative GPA; a fourth attempt requires an approved extenuating-circumstances petition (LACCD Administrative Procedure 4225).

Through Academic Renewal (LACCD Administrative Procedure 4240), up to 30 semester units of "D" and "F" grades earned within the LACCD may be disregarded from the cumulative GPA by petition, provided at least one semester has passed and the student has since earned a 2.0 GPA in at least 3 semester units at a U.S. regionally accredited institution. Academic renewal is irreversible and is not recognized for federal financial-aid Satisfactory Academic Progress purposes.

A student is placed on academic probation after attempting at least 12 semester units with a cumulative GPA below 2.0, and is removed once the cumulative GPA reaches 2.0 or higher. Progress probation applies once at least 12 units have been attempted and 50% or more carry a "W", "I", "NC" or "NP" entry (LACCD Administrative Procedure 4250).

A student on academic probation is subject to dismissal after three consecutive semesters with a cumulative GPA below 2.0, unless a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher is maintained. Dismissed students may appeal and must wait two semesters before petitioning for readmission (LACCD Administrative Procedure 4255).

The Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate in Science (AS) degrees require a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better in all coursework attempted in the curriculum the degree is based on, at least 60 semester units, and a grade of "C" or better (or "P" on a pass/no-pass basis) in every course counted toward the major (LACCD Administrative Procedure 4100).

Full-time students (12 or more graded units in the qualifying semester) qualify for the Dean's Honor List with a GPA of 3.5 or higher; part-time students (6-11 graded units) qualify after completing 12 or more graded units with a 3.5 or higher GPA (LACCD Administrative Procedure 4223). Students who make the Dean's Honor List for three or more consecutive semesters are placed on the President's Honor List.

The Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) and Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) degrees require a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all CSU-transferable coursework, though some CSU campuses and impacted majors may require a higher GPA for admission (LACCD Administrative Procedure 4100).
