Once final grades are recorded, they may be changed only for a clerical or calculation error, or a successful grade appeal — not, for example, to reflect supplemental assignments. Corrections must be made by the last day of classes of the following fall or spring semester.

An "I" (Incomplete) may be assigned when a student has completed passing work throughout most of the semester but cannot finish because of a late-semester emergency. The outstanding coursework must be submitted by the end of the next regular (fall/spring) semester or the "I" automatically converts to an F or a pre-set default grade.

An "L" (Late Grade/Continuing Course) applies to coursework that, by design, extends beyond a normal grading period (internships, practicums, field experience, independent studies). An unresolved "L" converts to an F if not resolved within one year.

Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) is determined by multiplying the credits for a course by the quality points received for that course, then dividing the total semester quality points for all courses by the total number of credits attempted.

Quality points are not calculated for credits transferred from another school — a transferring student earns quality points only on work taken at IUP.

Students may take courses on a pass-fail basis, up to 15 credits total over their university career (one pass-fail course per semester during the sophomore, junior, and senior years; Liberal Studies/Crimson Core and major/minor courses are excluded from this option). Credit earned under pass-fail counts toward total credits for graduation but not toward the credit-attempted data used to calculate the cumulative GPA. Failing a pass-fail course results in an F or N (non-participation failure) grade with its corresponding grade point average impact.

Institutional credits (courses numbered below 100) do not apply toward degree requirements for graduation but are used to determine enrollment status, including financial aid and NCAA athletic eligibility. Quality points are not calculated for credits earned at other schools — a transferring student earns quality points only for work completed at IUP.
