What FAMU's letter grades mean

FAMU describes each letter grade qualitatively: A is "Exceptional," B is "Superior," C is "Average," D is "Passing but poor," and F is "Failure."

FAMU also uses a distinct grade, WF ("Walked-away failure"), assigned when a student leaves the University without officially filing a Withdrawal Form — it is graded separately from a regular F, though both affect your GPA the same way.

An Audit (X) grade carries no course credit at all, so it is not part of your GPA calculation.

How your GPA is calculated at FAMU

Your term GPA is the number of grade points earned divided by the number of hours attempted for GPA; your cumulative GPA works the same way across your full FAMU record. The Student Information System recalculates both automatically whenever a grade changes.

Incomplete (I) grades don't count as hours attempted until they're replaced with a final grade, and courses approved for satisfactory-unsatisfactory (S-U) grading are also excluded from your GPA.

If you repeat an undergraduate course (1000-4999 level), only your final attempt counts toward your cumulative GPA under the Course Forgiveness Policy — available up to three times in your undergraduate career (engineering-prefix courses are not eligible).

Academic warning, probation, and suspension at FAMU

A cumulative GPA below 2.0 the first time triggers Academic Warning, with a registration hold until you meet with an advisor and build an academic plan.

If your cumulative GPA is still below 2.0 in a later semester, you move to Academic Probation, capped at 15 semester hours, and must earn at least a 2.0 term GPA every semester until your cumulative GPA recovers to 2.0.

Falling below a 2.0 term GPA while on probation results in Academic Suspension for the following semester. A student reinstated from suspension who again fails to reach a 2.0 term GPA faces Academic Dismissal and may not re-enroll at FAMU.

Minimum GPA to graduate from FAMU

To qualify for a bachelor's degree, you must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00, in addition to completing the required coursework.

At least 25% of the credit hours required for your degree must be earned through FAMU instruction, and the final 25% of your coursework must be completed in residence at FAMU.

Honor Roll, Dean's List, and President's List at FAMU

Honor Roll: full-time undergraduates with a 3.00+ semester GPA and a 2.5+ cumulative GPA.

Dean's List: full-time undergraduates with a 3.5+ semester GPA and a 3.0+ cumulative GPA.

President's List: full-time undergraduates with a perfect 4.0 semester GPA and a 3.5+ cumulative GPA.

Only undergraduates are eligible, you can appear on just one list per semester, and a "U" or "W" grade that semester disqualifies you.

Transfer GPA requirements at FAMU

To transfer to FAMU, you need a grade point average of at least 2.00 on a 4.00 scale on all college-level academic courses attempted, and you must be in good standing at your prior institution.

Individual transferred courses must have a grade of "C" or better, or "S"/"P." Your transfer grades themselves are not factored into your FAMU GPA — only FAMU coursework counts toward it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at FAMU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at FAMU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does FAMU use plus/minus grading?

No. FAMU's published grade-point table uses bare letter grades only (A, B, C, D, F, plus WF) — no A+, A-, B+, or other plus/minus variants appear anywhere in the catalog's grading policy.

What GPA do I need to stay in good academic standing at FAMU?

You need a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Falling below that first triggers Academic Warning, then Probation (with a 15-hour course-load cap), and eventually Suspension if your term GPA stays under 2.0.

If I repeat a class at FAMU, does it count twice in my GPA?

No. Under the Course Forgiveness Policy, only your final attempt at an undergraduate course counts toward your cumulative GPA, up to three uses during your undergraduate career (engineering courses are excluded). Every attempt still stays on your transcript.
