Columbia's letter-grade system is shared across all of its undergraduate schools — Columbia College, the School of General Studies, the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), and Barnard College. Plus and minus grades are used for A, B, and C, but not for D or F.

A grade of Pass (P) is not counted in the GPA; it is used to cover a letter grade of C- or higher for students who elect the Pass/D/Fail option for a course. Grades of D and F are always counted in the GPA.

The Registrar weights each course by its number of credit points when calculating the GPA. Only Pass/D/Fail grades of D or F affect the GPA; a grade of Pass does not.

For a repeated course, only the grade from the first attempt counts toward the GPA — unless that first attempt was an F, in which case both attempts are factored in.

Class advisers review student records at the end of each term to determine whether a student should be placed on academic probation or monitored more closely.

A withdrawal (W) is a permanent, GPA-neutral mark that stays on the transcript even if the course is repeated. An Administrative Referral (AR) is a temporary mark used when a final letter grade cannot yet be assigned, pending completion of outstanding coursework.

For Columbia College students, no more than 6 points of coursework graded D may be credited toward the degree in any one academic year, and no more than 12 points overall. Only Columbia University coursework graded D counts this way — no transfer credit is awarded for a D earned elsewhere. A course graded D generally cannot count toward a major, concentration, or minor, except at Columbia Engineering (SEAS), where it can.

The cumulative GPA is used, alongside academic progress, to determine eligibility for honors such as the Dean's List or the Honor Society.

Only grades earned in Columbia University or Barnard College courses are counted in the GPA. Transfer credits, including summer credits earned at other institutions, do not count toward a student's GPA.
