How the GPA Is Calculated

A grade point is calculated for each course by multiplying the grade points earned by the number of course credits. The cumulative grade point average (GPA) is found by dividing the sum of grade points for all graded courses by the total number of graded credit hours earned.

  • Pass/fail (S/U) grades do not affect the cumulative GPA; S-graded courses still count toward total credits required for graduation, limited to two free electives per undergraduate career.
  • Withdrawal (W) and Audit (X) carry no grade points and do not affect the GPA.
  • An Incomplete (I) is provisional and automatically becomes an F if not resolved within three weeks of the semester's last regular exam, absent a Dean-approved extension.
  • If a course is repeated, only the higher grade counts toward the GPA and graduation requirements; both attempts remain on the transcript, but credit is earned only once.

Academic Standing, Probation, and Suspension

The minimum cumulative GPA to remain in good academic standing is 2.00 (C average). Academic censure (probation or suspension) is assessed at the end of each fall and spring semester against these cumulative-GPA thresholds by credits attempted:

Credits Attempted (Class)Probation/Suspension Threshold
0-23 (Freshman)Below 1.75
24-53 (Sophomore)Below 1.90
54-83 (Junior)Below 2.00
83+ (Senior)Below 2.00

Falling below the threshold for a single semester results in Academic Probation; falling below it for two or more successive semesters results in Academic Suspension.

GPA Requirements for Graduation

A bachelor's degree requires a minimum of 120 semester credit hours and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 (C average) in the total program of study, plus a C average (2.00) or higher within the student's major department. The last 30 credits must be completed at La Salle. An associate degree likewise requires a cumulative GPA of 2.00.

Graduation Honors and the Dean's Honor List

A bachelor's degree with honors requires a cumulative GPA of at least 3.4, with distinctions of cum laude (3.4), magna cum laude (3.6), and maxima cum laude (3.8).

The Dean's Honor List recognizes students completing at least 12 credits with letter grades of A, B, C, or D and a semester GPA of 3.5 or above (3 credits for non-traditional/evening students).

How Transfer Credit Affects the GPA

Transfer credit is awarded for courses completed elsewhere with a grade of C or better, but the grade itself is not included in the computation of a student's GPA at La Salle — only credit hours transfer, not grade points. A maximum of 70 credits may be transferred from other regionally accredited institutions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at La Salle University?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at La Salle University?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this La Salle University GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
