Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) GPA Calculator

RIT assigns quality points per credit hour based on a plus/minus letter grade, from A down to F, with no A+ grade offered. RIT calculates two grade point averages that appear on grade reports and transcripts: a University-Term GPA reflecting a single term, and a University-Cumulative GPA reflecting all RIT credit-bearing coursework completed to date. A separate yearly GPA is also calculated for part-time undergraduate students for dean's list purposes.

All GPA calculations at RIT are carried out to two decimal places; rounding is done by adding .005 to the unrounded result and truncating after the second decimal place.

Several grade notations carry no quality points and do not affect GPA: Withdrawn (W), Incomplete (I, until a permanent grade is assigned), Pass/No Pass (P/NP) for eligible undergraduate electives, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) for eligible graduate and cooperative-education coursework, Audit (AU), Registered (R, graduate thesis-in-progress), Waived courses (WV), X grades (credit by exam, non-traditional learning, or competency), and Comprehensive Graduate Examination outcomes (P/F/T).

An undergraduate may repeat a course to raise a grade; the last grade earned stands as final even if lower than the original. For graduate students permitted to retake a course, all attempts count toward the graduate cumulative GPA.

Beyond the university's own grading requirements, individual RIT colleges and academic programs may set more rigorous requirements for maintaining good academic standing. Any such college-level or program-level requirement must be approved by the dean (or, for programs housed outside the college structure, the director of the academic unit), clearly defined within published college policy, communicated in the university bulletin, and communicated to the Provost's Office.

An F grade does not count toward undergraduate residency requirements. For graduate students, C- grades and below do not count toward the fulfillment of program requirements for a graduate degree.

Graduate degree certification requires a program grade point average — manually calculated by the academic unit from all academic program course attempts — of at least 3.00 (a "B" average).

No grade exclusions or re-inclusions may occur once a degree has been certified for completion.

For graduate students, the total combined amount of credit applied through external (non-RIT) transfer credit, waived courses, and credit by competency may not exceed 30% of the total credits in the graduate program, as noted in the graduate catalog.
