How grading works at Monash University Malaysia

Monash University Malaysia uses the same global grading schema as every other Monash campus, including its Australian home campuses: five core grades -- High Distinction (HD), Distinction (D), Credit (C), Pass (P), and Fail (N) -- each awarded from a fixed marks band, with no relative or curved grading involved.

Two procedural outcomes sit outside these five bands: Hurdle Fail (NH), awarded when a student would otherwise have passed but did not satisfactorily complete a unit's separate hurdle requirement, and Withdrawn Fail (WN), awarded for withdrawing from a unit after the official withdraw-fail deadline. Neither is a standard achievement band -- both are administrative overrides layered on top of the core grading table.

What's distinctive about Monash Malaysia is not the letter grades themselves, but how they're turned into a running average -- see how CGPA is calculated below.

How Monash University Malaysia calculates your CGPA

Students at Monash's Malaysia campus have their academic performance summarised as a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) -- a calculation used specifically in Malaysia in place of the GPA Monash reports at its Australian campuses. Same letter grades, different value column: Malaysia's CGPA values are not the same numbers as Australia's GPA values for the same letters.

The calculation itself is a straightforward credit-weighted average:

CGPA = (sum of each unit's CGPA value × that unit's credit points) ÷ (total credit points attempted)

Fails and repeats both count. Under normal circumstances, every grade you receive -- including fail grades and grades from any repeated units -- is given a numerical value, and all of those values are averaged into your CGPA. Monash does not drop a failed attempt or replace it with a later, better attempt; both remain part of the running average.

Unlike in Australia, your CGPA does not appear on your official Monash academic transcript. If you need your CGPA confirmed (for a job application or similar), you request a separate CGPA letter from Student Services in Malaysia or Monash Connect.

Monash does not publish a CGPA-to-percentage conversion formula -- there is no official Monash equivalent of a "CGPA × 25" or similar rule.

Honours classification is a separate track from your CGPA

Monash Malaysia students completing a one-year honours degree, or the embedded-honours component of a four-year-or-more bachelor's honours degree, also receive a separate Honours degree classification for that specific course grade. This classification is not derived from CGPA -- it's computed from the Weighted Average Mark (WAM), a marks-based average calculated to three decimal places rather than the credit-weighted grade-point average used for CGPA.

  • H1 -- First Class Honours (WAM 80 to 100)
  • H2A -- Second Class Honours, Division A (WAM 70 to under 80)
  • H2B -- Second Class Honours, Division B (WAM 60 to under 70)
  • Pass grade (WAM 50 to under 60)

A student therefore accumulates an ongoing CGPA throughout their course and separately receives this classification for the honours component when they finish -- the two exist side by side rather than one replacing the other.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at Monash University Malaysia?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at Monash University Malaysia?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Monash University Malaysia GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does Monash University Malaysia use GPA or CGPA?

CGPA. Monash's Grading Schema Procedure states that the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) calculation is used in Malaysia in place of the GPA calculation Monash reports at its Australian campuses -- both are computed from the same underlying HD/D/C/P/N letter grades, but Malaysia's CGPA values are different numbers from Australia's GPA values for the same letters.

Do failed or repeated units still count toward your CGPA at Monash Malaysia?

Yes. Under normal circumstances, all grades -- including fail grades and grades from any repeated units -- are given a numerical value, and those values are all averaged into your CGPA. A failed or superseded attempt is not dropped or replaced by a later attempt.

Does your CGPA appear on your official transcript at Monash Malaysia?

No. Unlike the GPA shown on an Australian Monash transcript, the CGPA used in Malaysia does not appear on your official academic record. Students who need their CGPA confirmed -- for example, for a job application -- request a separate CGPA letter from Student Services in Malaysia or Monash Connect.

Is Monash's Honours classification the same as your CGPA at Monash Malaysia?

No. Your CGPA is an ongoing, credit-weighted average across every unit you complete. An Honours classification (First Class, Second Class Division A/B, or Pass) is a separate, one-time classification awarded only for the final honours-degree course grade, and it's computed from your Weighted Average Mark (WAM) rather than your CGPA. The two exist alongside each other, not as substitutes for one another.

Is there an official CGPA-to-percentage conversion at Monash University Malaysia?

No. Monash's own Grading Schema Procedure and its live GPA/CGPA pages state the credit-weighted CGPA formula itself, but do not publish any separate formula for converting a CGPA figure into an equivalent percentage.
