GPA Calculation and Course Repetition

Grade point average (GPA) is computed by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of grade point units. Units for which a grade or symbol of CR, NC, P, NP, W, I, IP, MW, EW, RD, N, Y, or X is assigned do not count as grade point units in the calculation of a GPA.

A course with a substandard grade (D, F, NP, NC, or W) may be repeated for a total of three attempts; a second attempt requires no special approval, a third requires counselor consultation, and a fourth or more requires petition to the Academic Standards Committee. When repeated, the first two substandard grades are excluded from the GPA calculation; a fourth-or-later attempt is instead averaged with the third grade rather than excluded. Substandard grades may also be alleviated (disregarded in GPA computation) without repetition after at least two years have elapsed, subject to petition and minimum unit/GPA thresholds.

Academic and Progress Probation

A student is placed on academic probation when cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 after attempting 12 or more semester units, or when cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 in two consecutive semesters. Removal from academic probation occurs once cumulative GPA reaches 2.0 or better.

A student is placed on progress probation when units recorded as W, I, NP, or NC reach or exceed 50% of attempted units (after 12 or more units attempted); removal occurs when that percentage drops below 50%.

A student who has attempted at least 12 units is dismissed for one semester if, in each of three consecutive semesters, cumulative GPA is below 2.0 and/or the W/I/NP/NC percentage reaches 50% or more.

Associate Degree GPA Requirement

The Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate in Science (AS) degrees require 60 units with at least a 2.0 ("C") cumulative grade point average in all courses applicable to the degree, plus a minimum of 12 degree-applicable units completed in residence at Fresno City College.

Dean's List and Graduation Honors

Dean's List recognizes a 3.5 grade point average for the previous semester with a minimum load of 12 units.

Honors at graduation are based on the grades earned during the semester preceding graduation: High Honors requires a 3.3-3.49 cumulative GPA, and Highest Honors requires a 3.5-4.0 cumulative GPA.

Credit for AP, IB, and CLEP Exams

Fresno City College awards general education credit for a College Board AP examination score of 3 or higher in designated subjects, and awards associate degree general education credit for passing IB and CLEP exam scores. Course-to-course equivalency for AP/CLEP/IB credit is determined separately by Fresno City College faculty.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at Fresno City College?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at Fresno City College?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Fresno City College GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
