New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) GPA Calculator

Quality Points = Grade Points × Credit Hours. Grade Point Average = Total Quality Points ÷ Total GPA Hours.

A course may be taken no more than four times at NJIT and/or another institution, including withdrawals. If an undergraduate course is repeated at NJIT, the lowest of the grades is excluded from the cumulative GPA and all other grades are included (all grades still appear on the transcript). If a repeated course is passed via transfer credit, only the lowest letter grade is excluded from the GPA calculation.

When a student changes major, courses that apply only to the previous program may be excluded from the cumulative GPA calculation at the new program advisor's discretion; courses that apply to the new program, including general education requirements, may not be excluded.

An Incomplete (I) is given only in rare cases of special circumstances and converts to an F if not resolved by the end of the next regular semester. S and U grades (used only in co-op, teaching methods, ESL, and physical education courses) do not count toward GPA, and credits earned with a U cannot count toward a degree.

Academic standing is determined at the end of each fall and spring semester from both the semester (TERM) and cumulative (CUM) GPA.

• Good Standing: TERM and CUM GPA both at least 2.0.
• Academic Warning: first semester TERM GPA of 1.75–1.99, or a later TERM GPA below 2.0 while CUM GPA is still at least 2.0 with no prior standing issues. Can occur only once; the following semester is capped at 15 credits (9 in summer).
• Academic Probation: first semester TERM GPA below 1.75, a TERM GPA below 2.0 following a prior Warning, or a CUM GPA below 2.0 with no prior standing issues. Can occur only once; the following semester is capped at 14 credits (9 in summer) with a required improvement plan.
• Academic Pre-Suspension: reached from Probation when TERM GPA recovers to 2.0 but CUM GPA remains below 2.0; students are given up to 12 further attempted credits, approved by their advisor, to raise CUM GPA to 2.0.
• Academic Suspension: follows a further TERM or CUM GPA below 2.0 after Probation or Pre-Suspension. Can occur only once before permanent dismissal.
• Academic Dismissal: permanent removal after a second Academic Suspension following reinstatement.

To graduate, a student must attain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all courses the catalog lists as required for their curriculum, and a cumulative GPA of 2.0 in the upper-division course requirements of their major.

The Dean's List recognizes students who complete 12 or more degree credits in a fall or spring semester with a semester GPA of 3.00 or better and no incomplete grades or grade below "C".

Graduation honors, requiring a minimum of 60 credits in residence at NJIT with at least 33 in upper-division courses, are: cum laude (3.400–3.649 cumulative GPA), magna cum laude (3.650–3.849), and summa cum laude (3.850–4.00).

The NJIT Presidential Medal is awarded to graduates with a cumulative GPA of 4.0 who earned a grade of A in every course taken at NJIT and in all transfer courses applied to degree requirements, meeting the same 60/33-credit residency requirement.

Students in good standing may register for approved courses at another college. Transfer credit is posted to the NJIT transcript only if the grade earned is a "C" or higher. Such courses are not factored into the NJIT semester GPA calculation, but may interact with the Undergraduate Course Repetition Policy if the course was previously attempted at NJIT.
