College of New Caledonia (CNC) GPA Calculator

CNC records final grades as a letter grade, but its Education Council-approved policy defines a percentage band for every letter as part of the official Standard Grading Scale, used for the majority of programs and courses:

• A+ 90–100% — Excellent Achievement — 4.33 grade points
• A 85–89.9% — 4.00
• A- 80–84.9% — 3.67
• B+ 76–79.9% — Good Achievement — 3.33
• B 72–75.9% — 3.00
• B- 68–71.9% — 2.67
• C+ 64–67.9% — Satisfactory Achievement — 2.33
• C 60–63.9% — 2.00 (the lowest standing that can serve as an acceptable prerequisite, unless a course description or program requirement says otherwise)
• C- 55–59.9% — 1.67
• D 50–54.9% — Marginal Achievement — 1.00
• F 0–49.9% — Unsatisfactory Achievement (fail) — 0.00

Where an external accrediting body requires a different scale, an Alternative Grading Scale applies instead for that specific program, as set out in the course outline.

Other CNC grades and transcript notations

Beyond the standard letter scale, CNC's policy defines several notations that are not calculated in the grade point average:

• N (Never Attended) — registered but did not attend and did not officially withdraw.
• AG (Annotated Grade) — for students who completed a modified program; an annotated report is available.
• AEG (Aegrotat Standing) — a compassionate pass approved by the Dean and Registrar, based on satisfactory term marks, when a student can't complete the course due to serious, documented extenuating circumstances.
• S / U — successful / unsuccessful achievement in a competency-based course.
• SD (Standing Deferred) and CIP (Course in Progress) — temporary grades pending outstanding requirements.
• AUD (Audit), WD (Withdrawal), WE (Withdrawal for Extenuating Circumstances), and TER (Terminated) — enrolment-status and transcript notations.

A student's Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated by multiplying the grade points earned by the number of credits for each course, adding those products together, then dividing by the total credits earned. Worked example from the policy: courses graded A (4.0), B (3.0), C (2.0), D (1.0), and F (0.0) across 3, 3, 4, 2, and 3 credits respectively give 12+9+8+2+0 = 31 grade-point-credit-hours over 15 credits, for a GPA of 31 ÷ 15 = 2.07.

CNC also defines a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) — the grade point average of all credit courses taken since first admission — and a Term GPA (TGPA) — the grade point average for a defined period (e.g. one term).

No formula is published for converting a GPA back into a percentage.

Repeating a course at CNC

Grades for all course attempts are recorded on transcripts — repeat attempts are never removed from the record. However, only the highest grade earned is used in the GPA calculation, so repeating a course cannot lower a student's GPA contribution from that course.

Official grade of record

A final grade is not official until it has been recorded by the Office of the Registrar in CNC's student information system. Grades shown in learning platforms such as Moodle are not considered official. If there's ever a discrepancy between platforms, the grade entered in CNC's student information system stands as the official grade.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) repeat allowance

Adult Basic Education (ABE) students in Fundamental- and Intermediate-level upgrading courses have their own repeat notation, CS (Continuing Status), letting them repeat at the same level. This grade may be used twice per Fundamental-level course and once per Intermediate-level course, and the relevant Educational Administrator must sign off on all CS grades. This is a non-credit, developmental notation, separate from the standard credit-course grading scale.

Final grades are used to calculate GPA and to determine a student's academic status and formal achievement, including qualification for academic awards or instances of academic probation. (The specific GPA thresholds for academic standing/probation are set out in a separate policy, Academic Standing E-1.03, not itself part of the Grading System policy.)

Any student in a program where GPAs are calculated who has a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher at the time of graduation is considered to have graduated with honors. "Graduation Honors" is noted on the transcript by the Office of the Registrar.

CNC records several notations for credit obtained outside normal course completion, none of which are calculated into the GPA:

• PL (Prior Learning) — credit awarded through the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process.
• E (Exemption granted) — a program or course requirement is waived; the student may need to take a replacement course for the credits.
• TRF (Transfer Credit Granted) — for transferable courses completed with a grade of C or greater.
• TRD (Transfer Credit Granted) — for transferable courses completed with a passing grade up to C-.
